This course is designed for school leaders and educators who are establishing a Structured Literacy approach with a focus on effective integration of writing. The Science of Reading research shows that teaching writing is most impactful when paired with rich reading and oral language experiences. The language used in complex texts differs from the language most students will encounter through everyday speech. This poses a number of challenges for many of our learners when faced with having to read, comprehend, and write about challenging text. Participants will explore the reading/writing connection and theoretical models that underpin the Science of Reading/Writing instruction. They will explore 3 evidence-based strategies to support students as they read grade-level text and simultaneously develop daily writing skills in the Structured Literacy classroom.
